On New Year's Day, state parks in all 50 states will be participating in a First Day Hike. It is a free way for both families and individuals to start off the new year by getting out and getting some exercise while connecting with nature.
“Last year nearly 55,000 people rang in the New Year, collectively hiking over 133,000 miles throughout the country on the guided hikes. Numerous others hiked state park trails throughout the day.”
The First Day Hike programs are aimed at fighting obesity, promoting a healthier start to the New Year, and encouraging people to explore their natural surroundings.
All First Day Hikes are free and guided by knowledgeable park volunteers. On these hikes participants will explore different terrains depending on the park, ranging from beaches to lakes and mountains to canyons. Hikers will explore trails through great forests, wildlife expeditions and much more.
